THE BRIGHT SIDE

Decide to be happy today, to live with what is yours – your family, your business, your job, your luck. If you can’t have what you like, maybe you can like what you have.

Just for today, be kind, cheerful, agreeable, responsive, caring, and understanding. Be your best, dress your best, talk softly, and look for the bright side of things. Praise people for what they do and do not criticize them for what they cannot do. If someone does something stupid, forgive and forget. After all, it’s just for one day.

Who knows, it might turn out to be a nice day.

THE BRIGHT SIDE

I'm looking out the window
and the day is drab and dreary,
And I'm trying to console myself
by thinking something cheery
I know it's simply horrible
to get in such a slump
And I also know it's up to me
to get across the hump
And I realize I'm selfish
to mention this to you
For, gee, you might be feeling
a little 'low-down' too
but often when I feel like this
I tell myself it's true
That I am not the only one
who feels 'low-down and blue'
And just knowing there are others
who feel the way I do
Renews my sinking spirit
and keeps me smiling through
and know that it's natural
to take a 'spirit-dive'
Provides the spunk and courage
to hang on and survive
And while there are a lot of moods
that we can drive away
by looking on the BRIGHT SIDE
in all we do and say,
There also is a loneliness
that God meant us to feel
But, gee, it sure is mighty hard
to know which one is real
And I'd hate to be a 'sad sack'
who never saw the sun
And just complained that every day
was such a dreary one.
But I know that all the dark days
are just part of God's plan
We should accept them graciously
and do the best we can...
So I'll just keep on trying
for I know it's 'Gospel true'
there never was a cloud so dark
the sun could not shine through!

On the Bright Side Newsletter

I send this little letter out each morning to all my family and friends and even to a few people that I've never met. Many of them send it on to others too. So in order to make it available to more people I post the 'brighter side' of the news here each day in this journal.

The letter began as an effort to keep in touch with my family as they are spread out in all directions. My family, friends and God are the most important things in my life.

You'll find quotes, poems and stories and even a few recipes included in this newsletter. I try to find something new each day to share.

In a world that very often publishes only the dark side of things I felt that others would be encouraged to hear about
'the bright side'.

It's SATURDAY!

Today is DICTIONARY Day

If your last name is Webster, and you were born on October 16, you can pretend that today is all about your ancestor, Noah Webster, the Father of the American Dictionary, who was in fact born today and whose name is associated with the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

The objective of this day is to emphasize the importance of dictionary skills, and seeks to improve vocabulary.

Webster began to write his dictionary at the age of 43. It took him 27 years to finish it! In addition to traditional English vocabulary, it contained uniquely American words.

The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.

NEW IN THE KITCHEN

It's Sweetest Day!

Now here is a day dedicated just for your sweetie. It exists as an opportunity for you to recognize that sweet and special someone. It doesn’t matter who that person is, or what their relation to you. They just have to be sweet in order to get a little recognition.

Herbert Birch Kingston, a Cleveland, Ohio philanthropist and candy company employee started Sweetest Day. He wanted to bring happiness to orphans, shut-ins and under-privileged. His intent was to show these people that they were not forgotten. In 1922, he started this holiday by giving candy and small gifts.

Sweetest Day is an observance celebrated primarily in the Great Lakes region and parts of the Northeast United States on the third Saturday in October. It now largely involves the exchange of small presents, such as chocolate, greeting cards, and flowers

Chocolate Sweetheart Cake

3 tablespoon Cocoa

¾ cups All purpose flour

¼ cups Granulated sugar

¼ cups Packed light brown sugar
½ teaspoon Baking soda
½ cups Water
3 tablespoon Vegetable oil

1/8 teaspoon Salt
½ teaspoon White vinegar

½ teaspoon Vanilla extract

Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour an 8" square baking pan.

In a medium-sized bowl, stir together sugars, flour, cocoa,baking soda and salt. Add water, vinegar, oil, and vanilla; beat with a whisk until smooth. Pour batter into prepared pan.
Bake in a 350-degree F oven for about 18 to 20 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes. Remove from pan to wire rack. Cool completely.

Transfer to cutting board. Cut cake into four pieces using 3 ¼-inch heart-shaped cookie cutter. Spread chocolate frosting on top of two pieces. Place remaining two hearts on top. Garnish with decorator icing.

Makes 2 small cakes

For the Chocolate Frosting :
In a small microwave bowl, place 1 tablespoon butter.
Cook on high (100 percent power) for 20 seconds or until the butter melts. Stir together 2/3rds cup powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon cocoa in a separate bowl. Add to butter mixture alternately with 2 to 3 tablespoons milk.

Stir in 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract.

Makes about 1/3rd cup frosting.
