For Sunday, August 8th, 2010
The adult human body has 206 bones. An infant may have from 300-350 bones at birth. Some of these will fuse together as the child grows and so with years the number of overall bones will drop to 206. Of these 206 bones more than half (103) are in the hands and feet.
Tonight is Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Night, a night for gardeners who grew too much zucchini
By the time August arrives, gardeners are reaping far more zucchini than they can possibly use. They use it daily in an untold number of recipes, from soups and stews, to breads and dips. Still, the fruit matures on the vine faster than anyone can even pick it.
Zucchini Cake
4 eggs
2 cups white sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 (8 ounce) can crushed pineapple, drained
1 cup chopped walnuts
2 cups grated zucchini
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons milk
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a tube pan.
Sift together flour, cinnamon, salt, baking powder, and baking soda on to a piece of waxed paper.
In a large bowl, beat eggs and sugar until light colored. Mix in oil. Add sifted ingredients to egg mixture, and beat for 2 minutes. Stir in pineapple, chopped nuts, vanilla, and zucchini. Mix thoroughly. Pour batter into prepared pan.
Bake for 80 minutes, or until tester inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean. Cool for 30 minutes.
To Make Glaze: In a small bowl, combine the confectioners' sugar and the milk. When cake has cooled, pour glaze over cake.
PRAYERS
When youth is done;
When all the days are gray days, coming after
The warmth, the sun.
God keep me then from bitterness, from grieving,
When life seems cold;
God keep me always loving and believing
As I grow old.
The wise person has learned that today’s roses are far more fragrant than yesterday’s faded laurels
