Today is May Day which has been celebrated for hundreds of years. Our modern day observances have both green and red roots. For some people it is a celebration of spring. May Day is also a celebration of workers rights, marked by rallies, parades and marches. In 1958 President Eisenhower declared that they second type of May day were communist, hence the red roots, and created a new holiday called Law Day to take its place.
One of the most popular May Day traditions is the maypole dance, which was created by the ancient Druids of the British Isles. During the Beltane festival, people preformed a circle dance around a pole. The dance evolved over the years to include the ribbons and standard weaving patterns we still use today.
Celebrate the rich history of May Day and create your own May Pole, listen to May Pole music, or drop off a bouquet of May flowers at loved ones or neighbor’s door.
If you cannot see the bright side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
At last came the golden month of the wild folk — honey sweet May, When the birds come back, and flowers come out and the air is full of sunrise scents and songs of the dawning year.
Samuel Scoville Jr.
When I was in school we’d gather outside and do a maypole dance. We’d weave the colored ribbons hanging from the pole, in and out. It was a joyful day and everyone was thankful for a beautiful Spring day to be outside.
At our house we’d gather flowers outside that should have bloomed in April. Every thing always looks brighter and more beautiful in the Spring. It is my favorite season.
It’s hard to believe that I’ve been here in my new home state of ’Texas for just about a month now. I left my home in Ohio on April 1st and traveled here the next day.
Spring here is like Summertime in Ohio. There are beautiful wild flowers blooming in the fields all around here. The housing development I live in is in the country, but it’s only about 20 minutes to stores and shopping facilities. Other than the Austin airport, I haven’t been to the big cities yet, like Austin or San Antonio, but I’m sure to see them as they are always looking for new places to see.
Hope you have a Happy May Day! and I Hope you all have a WONDERFUL Wednesday!

I hope you all enjoy a beautiful May Day!
My favorite month!
I didn't know that about Eisenhower; that's sort of sad, but perhaps the mindset of several of his generation at the time.
What wonderful memories you've awakened! I never saw a May pole, but sure enjoyed fashioning 'vases' out of brightly-colored construction paper and leaving on our neighbors' doors. Oops! I don't know what happened with that duplicate (last) sentence. Blogger's doing some crazy stuff lately.
I a m sure glad to be in May - April seemed so long.
What a bunch of stuff in the month of May to celebrate.
We used to do the May Pole too at school - I wonder if they still do now?
Oh lady, this was a good post. We enjoyed it especially about your new home state. You were a big part of our trip talk yesterday, hoping you would be enjoying your time in a new state.
You answered some questions, THANKS and yes continuing learning and seeing more. San Antonio is one of our favorite destinations.
Love you lady!
