THE BRIGHT SIDE

Decide to be happy today, to live with what is yours – your family, your business, your job, your luck. If you can’t have what you like, maybe you can like what you have.

Just for today, be kind, cheerful, agreeable, responsive, caring, and understanding. Be your best, dress your best, talk softly, and look for the bright side of things. Praise people for what they do and do not criticize them for what they cannot do. If someone does something stupid, forgive and forget. After all, it’s just for one day.

Who knows, it might turn out to be a nice day.

THE BRIGHT SIDE

I'm looking out the window
and the day is drab and dreary,
And I'm trying to console myself
by thinking something cheery
I know it's simply horrible
to get in such a slump
And I also know it's up to me
to get across the hump
And I realize I'm selfish
to mention this to you
For, gee, you might be feeling
a little 'low-down' too
but often when I feel like this
I tell myself it's true
That I am not the only one
who feels 'low-down and blue'
And just knowing there are others
who feel the way I do
Renews my sinking spirit
and keeps me smiling through
and know that it's natural
to take a 'spirit-dive'
Provides the spunk and courage
to hang on and survive
And while there are a lot of moods
that we can drive away
by looking on the BRIGHT SIDE
in all we do and say,
There also is a loneliness
that God meant us to feel
But, gee, it sure is mighty hard
to know which one is real
And I'd hate to be a 'sad sack'
who never saw the sun
And just complained that every day
was such a dreary one.
But I know that all the dark days
are just part of God's plan
We should accept them graciously
and do the best we can...
So I'll just keep on trying
for I know it's 'Gospel true'
there never was a cloud so dark
the sun could not shine through!

I send this little letter out each morning to all my family and friends and even to a few people that I've never met. Many of them send it on to others too. So in order to make it available to more people I post the 'brighter side' of the news here each day in this journal.

The letter began as an effort to keep in touch with my family as they are spread out in all directions. My family, friends and God are the most important things in my life.

You'll find quotes, poems and stories and even a few recipes included in this newsletter. I try to find something new each day to share.

In a world that very often publishes only the dark side of things I felt that others would be encouraged to hear about

Today is the first birthday in our family for 2024. It’s our Pretty Lady’s birthday!

It is also Hot Toddy Day which celebrates a delicious drink made with honey, lemon, hot water and the spirit of your choice, usually whiskey, brandy, or rum. It’s the perfect way to warm up on a cold winter day and a few sips can reduce cold or flu symptoms.

Hot Toddies originated in Scotland during the 18th century. While the exact details are unknown, historians believe that the recipe was developed to make the taste of Scotch whiskey more palatable. One theory suggests that the word toddy evolved from Tod’s well, also known as Todian Spring, the water supply for Edinburgh.

Today there are many variations of the original toddy recipe. Some versions call for tea, coffee, cocoa, apple cider, spices or even butter.

To celebrate today, brew up your own favorite type of hot toddy today and enjoy!

This birthday is the longest of my long distance celebrations. My granddaughter lives on the west coast, further away than any of the other ones. I haven’t seen or heard from her for a long time, so I will be lighting my birthday candle and saying a prayer for her.

My husband’s great granfather owned a bar and every Christmas he would place a bowl of his version of a hot toddy out for his customers to enjoy.

The recipe was passed on to me by my husband’s aunt. It is call a Tom and Jerry! They also served it to us when we would go for our Christmas visit. His uncle had traveled to Germany and found that the bar was still there.

At one time, I owned a Tom and Jerry Bowl and cups, but passed that on to one of my children when I moved here.

I always thought of a toddy as German and was surprised to learn it originated in Scotland. I do have some Scottish in my ancestry too.

I always suspected that my West Virginia relatives were somehow related to Scotland because they lovesthe hills there and even farmed them.

Perhaps one of my early ancestors settled there because it reminded him of home. I never heard anyone mention it, but only heard about the English and German connections.

We have another day in the 30’s to look forward to with a chance of snow, but they say we’re about to get colder on the weekend. The winds finally died down some yesterday evening. At least we don’t have to deal with that too. Blowing and drifting snow can be very hazardous.

I didn't realize the origins of Hot Toddy (aka Tom and Jerry), but how I'd love to have some of what my mother used to make. Unlike Tuesday's wild weather, today is supposed to be mellow. Then it's supposed to start all over again tomorrow. Something our meteorologist shared on FB made me smile: "Alabama's next 10 days look thunderfloody with a chance of snownadocane."
