Today is National Eggnog Day which is one of the most popular beverages served during the holidays, so it is very appropriate that this is celebrated on Christmas Eve.

The traditional recipe for eggnog is milk, cream, sugar, beaten eggs, spices and sometimes alcohol.  The type of alcohol depends on the country it is made.  In Europe eggnog is made with white wine.  Americans drink it with bourbon or rum while Peruvians use brandy and Germans use beer.

There are a few theories about how eggnog got it’s name.  One story claims that eggnog was first called egg n grog, which was eventually shortened to egg nog.  According to other sources the name the old English word for strong ale, nog.  This theory suggests that the combination of the words egg and nog refers to any drink that contains both eggs and alcohol.  

Regardless of how it got it’s name, it has been a favorite beverage for centuries.  

To celebrate today, make some today and toast the holidays !

THOUGHT FOR TODAY

I have to admit, I do loooove eggnog.

I love eggnog and keep some in the fridge during the Christmas season.  I like both varieties but usually have mine plain with with a sprinkle of nutmeg on top.

I’ve never made my own, but buy it in cartons at the store.  It is a very rich drink, so I only have a little at a time. When you eat a lot like I did yesterday, it’s not a drink to have. But it does go well with a few Christmas cookies. 

I came home with lots of goodies to have today.  I have ham, lasagna and a plate of cookies.  I even have a piece of pumpkin pie.  DS#6 made the lasagna and I made the ham.  We also had salad and a pickle dish full of good things.  They had some old fashioned sweet gerkins that were delicious.  I ate till I was full and still had room for dessert.  DS#5 made some tiramisu.  It was delicious and went down easily. I’ve never made my own, but he did an excellent job.  He said, the recipe came from pinterest.

There was a big selection of cookies and I tasted most of them.  I had to bring some home so I had them on hand in case company comes. Ha Ha! Who am I kidding,  I will be the one eating them, no doubt.  

I blew my diet for sure!  I’ll probably be on a sugar high for the rest of the season.

We are going to Christmas Eve church services tonight .  Even DS#6 and family are coming in for the service.  They didn’t want to miss out on Christmas Eve with me, grand ma.

It’s the children’s service that features angels and shepherds portrayed by the young children up to 9 years old.  None of the grands, here. qualifies to do that any more, but we enjoy seeing the others  and have gone for many years now.  It just wouldn’t seem right to do otherwise.  

It is unusually warm here, in the 50’s and it has been terribly foggy.  No wonder since we’ve had so much rain.

PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS

Please pray for God's protection of

our troops and HIS wisdom for their

commanders.

 

Almighty and eternal God,

Protect our military

as they discharge their duties

with the shield of your strength,

may the power of your love

enable them to return home in safety

that with all who love them

they may ever praise you for your loving care.

AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters and EMT’s.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.
