Today is Wright Brothers Day. The brothers Orville and Wilbur, tenacious American inventors, recorded the first manned, powered flight in 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
In 1903 when aviation was in its infancy, sustained flight was measured in seconds and piloting was a developing skill, and although early flight lacked sophistication, it threw open the doors for the evolution of the aviation industry, and set the stage for the global travel system that we take for granted today.
If you can't see the Bright Side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
The desire to fly is an idea handed down to us by our ancestors who... looked enviously on the birds soaring freely through space... on the infinite highway of the air.
Wilbur Wright
I won’t be flying today, but I did enjoy a nice flight at Thanksgiving. What could have been a long trip was made in just a few short hours. I’m so thankful I could spend that holiday with my out of town family. That is what the pictures of today. I’ll be definitely missing all their smiling faces at our get together today.
I have a little cooking to do here this morning so I have something to take to share. Otherwise it’s going to be a day of fun and family and lots and lots of good food.
Our snow has changed to rain. Overnight snow changed to sleet then rain. Hopefully everyone will have a safe trip. Praying for clear roads to travel on today.
On the Bright Side, I haven’t seen any mosquitoes in weeks !
I hope you all have a SUPER Saturday!
WHAT’S NEW IN THE KITCHEN
There is a food holiday to celebrate every day of the year!
Today is National Maple Syrup Day which provides us with the opportunity to enjoy and appreciate this delicious American treat. This sweet and unique flavor originated in America. Native American Indians were the first to harvest and boil the sap of the maple tree into a thick syrup.
I enjoy vanilla ice cream drizzled with Maple Syrup and it’s really good on pancakes, french toast and waffles too. However today’s recipe is one more way to enjoy this sweet treat.
Maple Cranberry Sweet Potatoes
4 lb. sweet potatoes
salt
1 c. pure maple syrup
1½ c. cranberries
3 tbsp. butter
In covered 6 quart saucepot, heat whole sweet potatoes with 1 teaspoon salt and enough water to cover to boiling on high. Reduce heat to low; simmer, covered, about 30 minutes or just until potatoes are fork tender. Drain. Set aside until cool enough to handle.
Meanwhile, in 1 quart saucepan, heat maple syrup to boiling on high. Reduce heat to medium, and boil gently 10 to 15 minutes or until reduced to 1/2 cup. Stir in cranberries, butter, and 1/2 teaspoon salt, and cook just until cranberries pop, about 5 minutes longer.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut cooled sweet potatoes crosswise into 1 inch thick slices and arrange in shallow 3
quart ceramic or glass baking dish, overlapping slices if necessary.
Spoon maple cranberry syrup evenly over potatoes. Bake, uncovered, 20 minutes or until hot.

Almighty and eternal God,
Protect our military

they may ever praise you for your loving care.
AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters
and Paramedics and EMT’s
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

This is a good post about flying. I hope Rudolph has brushed up on his flying skills. The Wright Bros. have a nice display at the Henry Ford Museum here in Dearborn. Have fun with your lovely family today and be safe all.
Looked like a lot of fun when you were visiting family last month :) So thankful flying was invented. I don't particularly care for it, but it is very convenient and quicker to get from point A to point B :)
Enjoy your time together with family today!
betty
I do not like flying so I avoid it at all costs. We once took an 18 hour flight to Sydney, Australia. It was NOT fun! I am glad you got to spend time with your family at Thanksgiving. Hope you are enjoying your family gathering today!!
How I wish I didn't loathe/fear flying!
Oh ya, I do it for expediency sake ... but what a hassle!
I've a mini-bottle of 'real' maple syrup a co-worker brought back from her New England adventure a couple years ago. You've reminded me, this season might just be time to get a move on and appreciate it!
I haven't flown in 4 1/2 years now Pam. My last experience was not a good one. Not the flying experience itself, that was great but all of the drama at the airport. I think that the airport is the worst most stressful of any flying trip. Hate airports. Loving all the family photos and that super looking sweet potato recipe. Putting it on my nice list! Have a fabulous Sunday. Hope your family gatherering went well. Love and hugs. xoxo
