Today is National Bird Day which celebrates the study of birds that Has been a popular pastime ever since the Victorian era and the term bird watching first appears as the title of a book in 1901. Millions of people across the glsobe consider themselves bird watchers.  This is defined as anyone who has traveled  for the primary  purpose of observing birds or has closely observed and identified birds around the home.

Since the 19th century, bird protection has become an increasingly important issue.  Birds are among the most popular animals in the exotic pet trade and most birds are in captive breeding programs are kept there for solely commercial gain.

In an attempt to put an end to bird captivity, every year Born Free USA, The Animal Protection Institute, and the Avian Welfare Coalition team up in support of National Bird Day.  Today bird enthusiasts and activists around the U.S.  are asked to take action on behalf of captive birds.  

To celebrate today, try to count and identify the birds that are flying free around your house.

I love to sit on the porch and watch the birds here.  There is all kinds, small ones and large ones like hawks flying around. There is a field behind the house that leads to a river beyond it.  We’ve seen cranes there too.

I used to own a parrot. She never really talked or did any tricks.  I didn’t let her out of the cage at all because she could fly into a wall and hurt herself.  She liked to bite anyone that tried to pet her.  Being caged up like that wasn’t fun at all and it was a lot of work trying to keep it clean too. She lived for over 30 years and I missed her when she was gone.  She was a good watch bird and always let me know when  someone was around by her screeching .  She was actually better at it than the dogs I had at the time.

The only bird I now have is my little ceramic brown bird that sits on the shelf in my room.  It is a reminders to me that God is watching over me just as he cares for every bird.

We’re supposed to have a mostly sunny day today with temps in the high 70’s. It’ll be a good day for porch sitting and bird watching too.  However, our temps will go back in the 50’s starting tomorrow.

PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS

Please pray for God's protection of

our troops and HIS wisdom for their

commanders.

 

Almighty and eternal God,

Protect our military

as they discharge their duties

with the shield of your strength,

may the power of your love

enable them to return home in safety

that with all who love them

they may ever praise you for your loving care.

AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters and EMT’s.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.
