Today is National Pie Day which honors a sweet filled treat we enjoy that is a relatively recent innovation. The Greeks and Romans made some of the first pies in history. People filled pastry shells with different kind of meat or seafood. They flavored them with a variety of spices and served them as part of the sweet course of the meal.
When Pilgrims made their voyage to the New World in the late 1600’s they arrived with English pie recipes for beef, lamb, duck, or pigeon. It wasn’t until the late 1800’s that the first sweet pies emerged. These featured the ingredients we’re accustomed to today, and by the 1940’s pie had become an iconic American dessert.
Whether you prefer apple, berry, pumpkin, or sweet potato, bake your favorite pie recipe for dinner tonight and celebrate !

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
We must have pie . Stress cannot exist in the presence of a pie.
David Mamet
I enjoyed a chicken pot pie for dinner yesterday but for today Blue Plate Beef Patties are on the menu:
Makes 4 servings
1 egg, room temperature
2 green onions with tops sliced
1/4 cup seasoned bread crumbs
1 Tbsp prepared mustard
1 1/2 lbs ground beef
1 jar beef gravy
1/2 cup water
2 to 3 tbsp prepared horseradish
1/2 lb fresh mushrooms, sliced
Minced fresh parsley, optional
In a large bowl, beat the egg, stir in onions, bread crumbs and mustard. Add beef and mix lightly but thoroughly. Shape into four 1/2 inch thick patties.
In an ungreased skillet, cook patties until meat is no longer pink, drain.
In a small bowl, combine gravy, water and horseradish, add mushrooms. Pour over patties. Cook uncovered, until mushrooms are tender and heated through. If desired sprinkle with parsley.
I’ll be having mine with some mashed potatoes today, They sound delicious.
The pictures today were taken one New Year’s Eve when I celebrated with DS#5 and family and we played a game called Pie in the Face. We laughed and laughed as we got hit in the face with some whipped cream.
We had some snow yesterday and may see some more coming our way today. It’s in the low 30’s and it definitely feels and looks like winter here. It’s a great day to turn the oven on if you want to bake a pie.
I hope you all have a GREAT start to this new week! Happy Monday!
COUNTING MY GIFTS
Things that really matter are the things gold can’t buy, so let’s have another cup o’ coffee and let’s have another piece o’ pie.

Pie in the Face is a fun family game!
I'll bet that Pie in the Face game is hysterical!
Interesting background about pies. Both my son and I would rather have a birthday pie than a cake any day.
Your Blue Plate patties are ringing my chimes over here. Back when I used to eat mashed potatoes I'd often take them and cover my meat and pretend it was a Beef Wellington. Ha!
I love chocolate peanut butter pie - big surprise.
