Today is Bow Tie Day which celebrates the elegant fashion accessory usually worn by men at formal occasions.  In the early days the black tie attire became a term synonymous with tuxedos with black bow ties.  In recent years bow ties have become cool again .  Today they are worn by many including one of my handsome grandsons shown in the picture above.

There are not many bowties here at my house, but I do love bow tie pasta.  I made up a big bowl of it yesterday and today I’m sharing the recipe.  

Bacon Cheddar Ranch Pasta Salad

3 c. bow tie pasta 

2/3 c. cheddar cheese, grated

6 slices cooked bacon, diced

2 or 3 small tomatoes, diced

1/3 c. broccoli, chopped

1/3 c. red onions, diced

1/3 c. black olives, optional

1/2 c. mayonaise

1/2 c. creamy ranch dressing

1 clove garlic, minced

1/2 tsp. oregano

Cook and drain pasta and rinse with cold water.

Add drained pasta to large bowl.  Add bacon, broccoli, onions, olives and tomatoes. Toss to combine.

Stir together the mayo, ranch dressing garlic and oregano.  Mix in with pasta until well coated and serve.

This makes a nice side dish or serve as a meal for lunch. You can even add cooked diced chicken to the mix to make it more substantial. They say it is best to add the dressing just before serving.

Tuesdays are usually my day to pay the bills and make the lists of the things I hope to get done this week.  A day to get organized and make plans.  It’s been very hot here and some of the schools in our area that are in progress closed for the day due to the heat.  Not all schools have air conditioning. Our own city schools don’t start until after Labor Day and I applaud them for their choice.  

It’s definitely a day to stay in and keep cool.

Today is Just Because Day which gives us a chance to do something without rhyme or reason.  Most often in life, we do things because we have to, we want to, or it’s expected of us.  None of those reasons apply today.

Today is the day to go out and do something just because.  It is most enjoyable if it is an uncommon or unexpected activity or action.  Just go with the first thing that comes to mind.  Just because activities often come from a whim or a what if type of thought.  

Celebrate the unexpected, the spontaneous, and the urge to act on impulse!

Just because it’s hot out, I thought I’d show you a few pictures of winter today.  Maybe they will make you feel cooler, or maybe they will be just be a reminder to be thankful for what we’ve got. 

We have some hot and humid weather here so most of what I do will be inside here at my house.  I’m so thankful for the central air conditioning in my house.  It’s worth the extra money spent on electric to be comfortable and cool.

I’m tempted to turn the oven on for a bit just to make some apple crisp as I have some very nice apples in the fridge to use up.  

I found an easy recipe to share with you all.  I’m happy to say that we’re now getting fresh apples here in Ohio and I love them!

Old Fashion Apple Crisp

6 cups tart cooking apples, peeled, cored and sliced

3/4 c. firmly packed brown sugar

3/4 cup uncooked old fashion oats

1/2 c, flour

1 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 cup cold butter

Heat the oven to 375 degrees.  Place apples into 8 inch square baking dish.

Combine brown sugar, oats flour and cinnamon in a bowl; cut in butter with pastry blender or for, until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.  Sprinkle sugar mixture over apples.

Bake 25 to 35 minutes until apples are tender and topping is golden brown.

Serve warm with ice cream if desired.

Makes 8 servings.

I do have a large toaster oven that will hold an 8 inch pan and it doesn’t heat the kitchen up the way my oven in the stove does.  So there’s a good possibility I’ll be enjoying some apple crisp later on today.

Today is Women’s Equality day which commemorates the 19th Amendment to the constitution granting women the right to vote.

This was the culmination of decades of effort by women suffragettes and others groups.  Today we celebrate their accomplishments made in gaining the right to vote and towards equality for women. 

This special day was created by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1971. It designates August 26th of each year as Women’s Equality Day.

In this day and age it’s hard to believe that there was a time when women were not allowed to vote.  I’m thankful for all that was done to make this happen.  I think we are all created equal and should be treated as such.  Sadly there are parts of the world that women are not treated equally at all.  

It’s Sunday and I’ll be off to church as usual today, but other than that I’m not so sure I’ll be doing much of anything else but relaxing.  It’s a blessing  live in a country where I have the right to worship as I please and do what I please.  

We are to have higher temps along with more humidity here for the next few days.  Summer is once again reminding us that it’s not Fall yet.  I’m just very grateful that we had a couple of cooler days to enjoy this week. 

The pictures above and below are of two more of my grandchildren as they started school this year.  They are both beginning college and new chapter in their lives.
