Beautiful Ohio was designated the state song on this date in 1969. Originally the song referred to the Ohio River. The music was composed in 1918 by Robert King. The lyrics were written by Ballard MacDonald who also wrote the lyrics to Back Home Again in Indiana. In 1989, the Ohio General Assembly adopted a change in the lyrics to focus on the state rather than the river. New lyrics were written by Youngstown lawyer Wilbert McBride.
Beautiful Ohio, Thy wonders are in view
Land where my dreams all come true.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
With the exception of a very few short times, I have always lived in Ohio. I was born, raised and now live in the same town. I'm what is know as a city girl. I love the country and have been blessed to visit there often, but 99% of my life has been spent in the same town. Thankfully I had grandparents that lived on a farm and I got to go there often when I was young.
Being out in the country gives you a whole different view of the world. I know things things that city girls never learn. I know about gathering eggs and I know about digging a hill of potatoes. I know how good a tomato tastes when you pick one and eat it while standing right in the garden.
I know how to fish and how to clean the fish and to fry them up too. I know how to make biscuits the country way with fresh buttermilk. I know how to churn butter and even have helped to make homemade cottage cheese. And I know how to milk a cow and I know not to chase one down. You get kicked in the face if you run behind them.
Ohio has a lot of farm land. They say that farming is getting to be a thing of the past, but you couldn't prove it to me. Every where we traveled this past summer had huge corn and soybean fields. I'd have to say those must be our two main crops here. I also saw fields of sunflowers and pumpkins too. Dairy farms are very prevalent as well as chicken farms. You can often smell them before you see them. Ah, that fresh country air.
The pictures today are of DS#6 and our little Lucky Guy making their way through a corn maze last week.
Ohio is a beautiful place to live, even if you are in the city.
Hope you all have beautiful Thursday!
and please pray for DDIL#1’s sister who will be having surgery to remove a cyst that was found on her pancreas. May the dear Lord bless her with a successful surgery and a speedy recovery. And may He guide the hands of the doctors caring for her.
I can't thank you all enough for your prayers and I know that those with prayers requests do appreciate them too.
COUNTING MY GIFTS
Everyone needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and cheer and give strength to body and soul alike.
I have counted at least 3 things I'm thankful for this past year and have now reached my 1000 gifts. I'm not stopping, but will continue on counting. There is always, always something to be thankful for.
1067. for beautiful Ohio
1068. for farms and farmers
1069. for warm toasted pumpkin seeds right out of the oven.
Enter into His courts with thanksgiving — and in His presence is fullness of Joy!
