ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
APRIL 26th, 2012
If you can't see the Bright Side, polish the dull side
John James Audubon (1785-1851) was America's foremost ornithological illustrator. After studying drawing in Paris under the French painter Jacques Louis David, Audubon struggled for many years to make a living from his art, shuttling back and forth between Europe and the United States and supplementing his income by giving drawing lessons, turning out portraits, playing the flute or violin at local dances, and at one time running a general store.
Eventually he had enough bird portraits to publish in book form. Birds of America, produced with the help of engraver Robert Havell, Jr., contains 435 hand-colored plates and was published in elephant folio format to accommodate the life-sized portrayals of birds on which Audubon insisted.
George Bird Grinnell, editor of Forest and Stream magazine, organized the Audubon Society in 1886 for the study and protection of birds. Today there are many branches of this organization, known as the National Audubon Society, and it remains dedicated to the conservation of wildlife and natural resources. Its members honor Audubon on his birthday, April 26th.
A Mocking Bird regularly resorts to the south angle of a chimney top and salutes us with sweetest notes from the rising of the moon until about midnight.

NEWS FROM HOME
The joy of nature is being able to see her beauty
If I had my choice I'd like to be outside everyday, but the weather around here hasn't been cooperating lately. I know I'm a fair weather bird for sure. I only like to be out on sunny and warm days.
I do enjoy watching the birds and thanks to people like Audubon I can look in my bird guide books and identify them too. I keep a set of binoculars at the camper, because it is there that I see birds that I don't see everyday here at home and very often they are up in the trees that surround the camper so the binoculars come in handy.
Maybe for the summer I should start a sketch book and draw all the birds I can identify there. It would be nice to keep a record for those wintry days when a little sunshine would be appreciated.
I think today is to be a little warmer here so just maybe if I hurry and get my chores done, I can get outside and watch those birds.
Hope you all have a wonderful Thursday!
