WEED APPRECIATION DAY
It may seem unlikely but there is a day commemorating most everything under the sun and today is no different. Welcome to Weed Appreciation Day, which falls on 28 March each year.
Well, there are many qualities about weeds to appreciate. For instance, some weeds have medicinal value. Others are extremely nutritious food for humans, birds and insects. Weeds are pioneers in land restoration. Some weeds have even have given mankind some very great ideas for inventions.
A few examples of delicious edible weeds are: Dandelion, Purslane, Clover, and Wild Garlic.
Weeds support many types of wildlife. Flying birds eat weed seeds. Duckweed provides nutritious food for water birds. Bees use the nectar of weed flowers. Many insects eat pollen and seeds of weeds. There's no dispute that weeds can be destructive to ecosystems and must be controlled using responsible methods. But they do provide benefits.
The most common weed we think of immediately is the dandelion. As a child, I loved them. I remember putting it under the chin of my friends to test whether or not they liked butter because I could or couldn’t see the yellow reflection on their chin. I used to make dandelion necklaces or crowns from the flowers I could collect. Of course, the best thing was at the end of the year, when you plucked bloom, full of seeds and would make a wish before scattering them across the yard.
A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill except for learning how to grow in rows.
NEWS FROM HOME
I don't know about you, but we have those little yellow dandelions growing here at our house. No matter how hard we try, they seem to return every year. To me there is something cheerful about them. They are bright and sunny looking until they spread all over and then you wish they were gone. The people across the street have some tiny little blue flowers blooming all over their yard. I think they are probably a weed but it is a beautiful sight to see none the less.
A weed is only a plant that is growing where it isn't supposed to be they say.
Hope your Wednesday is a wonderful one!
